Peter Dayton lives and works in East Hampton, New York. Inspired by surfing’s counter-culture vibe and progressive exhibitions such as 1964’s Post-Painterly Abstraction curated by Clement Greenberg, Dayton’s work pays homage to the vertically oriented, striped paintings of Gene Davis and Frank Stella. Dayton is recognized for his high gloss, rectangular and striped melding of high-art with pop culture in the series Surfboards by Clement Greenberg. He emphasizes arts “object-ness” by reinterpreting 1960s surfboard logos and the bright stripes of Kenneth Noland. In the early 90s, Dayton recalled Andy Warhol’s flower paintings and interest in consumerism with a series of highly glossed intricate flower collages. He has participated in many group and solo exhibitions including Peter Dayton: P-111, presented in 2006 at Salomon Contemporary, East Hampton. Dayton’s work is found in major collections such as Chanel, Neiman Marcus, the Denver Art Museum, and the Museum of Fine Art in Houston. |
